Task 1.
EXERCISE
Based on this assignment, we will need to create a font that is intended to
solve a larger problem or meant to be part of a solution in the area of your
interest be it graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design
or any other related area not necessarily reflecting your specialisation.
fig 1.0 Jyin logo
I had start my assignment refer by previous work. i like the curving and
sharp edges from the word so i extend on this assignment.
fig 1.1 Experiments of words (1.11.23)
I had tried different elements and curve for experiment. After feedback, sir
had advised me to keep the characteristics. The letter font are too
individual by their own and having their own characteristics. After the
consultation, i had tried to illustrate more and more different kind of
strokes and curve to check on which final output are betters.
fig 1.2 Experiments of words (2.11.23)
After two weeks of experiments, i had confirmed the final result i want and
i started to develop on my letters.
fig 1.2 Develop of letter "b" (2.11.23)
I had try to develop my "b" with the stroke from thin transform to thick for
the curve line.
fig 1.3 Develop of letter "e" (4.11.23)
For letter "e", using the curve stroke from "m" and "n", developing the
"e".
fig 1.4 Develop of letter "g" (4.11.23)
For letter "g", i had to develop from letter "y". Before using the stroke
from "y". I had tried few times to develop the letter. The result does not
fit the characteristics i want, so i redo again.
fig 1.5 Develop of letter "g" (4.11.23)
I had tried to develop few rounds, and develop the final result of letter "g"
and refined the letter "y".
fig 1.6 Develop of lowercase letters (8.11.23)
Here is the development of lowercase letter. I had make the invert
stroke from thin to thick.
fig 1.7 Develop from letter A-J (10.11.23)
After doing the lowercase letters, i had started to refined the uppercase
letters by using the stroke and curve from lowercase letters.
fig 1.8 Develop from letter K-V (11.11.23)
There are some of the word for example, "K" and "M" had took some times to
refined. There are too much stroke and i need to choose the best of it to
refined on it.
fig 1.9 Develop of numbers (11.11.23)
After finished up the uppercase letters and lowercase letters, i had
started to done my number and punctuation.
fig 2.0 Final outcome of gabbit font (12.11.23)
I named my font as "gabbit".
fig 2.1 Progress from FontLab 8 (14.11.23)
I had started to do my kerning and letter spacing in Font Lab.
fig 2.2 Kerning (14.11.23)
I had try to type out " The quick brown fox jump over the lazy frog"
to check the kerning and letter spacing.
fig 2.3 Gabbit font open type file (15.11.23)
After export as OpenType-TT, here is how it looks like.

fig 2.6 Progression of poster (20.11.23)
At first, i develop my font from Task 2, and i haven't think of any
topic or tittle for my poster. I was trying different type of poster for
my typeface. I had think of using chess as the main topic for my poster
as my word had the curve and the line look abit similiar for my typeface
but the result shows that is very unsuitable and also that is not what i
want.
fig 2.7 Research of poster (20.11.23)
I want my poster and title to looks more vintage like those 70~80
century where there is a lot of poster outside the shop. I had some
research to try on which are more suitable for my type font.
fig 2.8 Progress of poster application (20.11.23)
After the research, i start to develop my poster application. I had
used burger king and mcdonald poster as reference and try to develop
my own burger poster. By using the "yum" and "munm" to represent my
font and also related to my burger poster.
fig 2.9 Progress of poster application (20.11.23)
I found out i am still not satisfies on the progress of fig 2.6,
so i redo it with another type of poster. The result turn out abit lame,
is too similar from others and doesn't present my strong words and
typeface. So, i consult with sir, he had also suggest that I could work
better, might i watching all this typefont and poster too much and
affected the creative and design.
fig 3.0 Further research of poster (20.11.23)
After the feedback, I had further research for the poster. When i
staring the words, I keep think of the two characters that we always
seem when we was kids while reading the book and listen to the tape.
fig 3.1 Blackie's easy story book cover
By this idea, i had started to develop another type of poster.
fig 3.2 Progress of application poster (25.11.23)
By the creative thinking and design, i had started to develop my
final application poster.

FUTHER READING
fig 3.7 Book cover of "The Vignelli Canon"
I had started to reading this book, named "The Vignelli
Canon".This book provides an in-depth exploration of
typography, offering practical insights into its usage and
nuances.
This book delves into the structural elements that contribute
to a cohesive and visually appealing design.
Robert Bringhurst's comprehensive guide explores the art and
craft of typography. It complements Vignelli's teachings on
the syntactic aspects of design, providing a deeper
understanding of the details that make typography
effective.
In the context of pragmatics, its had included user
experience and usability in web design. Understanding how
users perceive and interact with designs is crucial, aligning
with Vignelli's emphasis on clear communication.

fig 3.8 pragmatics
|
The psychology of design and the importance of clarity in
communication had also mentioned in the book. It resonates
with Vignelli's pragmatic approach, emphasizing the need for
designs to be readily understood.Beside that, It highlights
the importance of attention to detail and discipline in
creating successful and sustainable design practices.

fig 3.9 appropriateness
|
The book had also included the intersection of
appropriateness and design, explores the art of creating
engaging and meaningful user experiences, aligning with
Vignelli's focus on problem-solving.
This book provides insights into decision-making processes,
offering a psychological perspective on human behavior.
Understanding how people think can enhance your approach to
creating designs that resonate.
I had explore a comprehensive collection of design
principles that transcend specific styles. This book aligns
with Vignelli's idea that design is a discipline with its own
set of rules applicable across various subjects.
REFLECTION
Experience
The journey towards completing the final assignment was a
lengthy and intricate process that commenced with the crucial
task of determining the shape or form we aimed to achieve. The
initial stages involved the creation of a personalized type
font, spanning from A to Z, inclusive of punctuation. This
process demanded considerable time and patience, yet I found
it to be a remarkably rewarding experience, particularly when
compared to other assignments.
Observation
From my perspective, I don't consider myself to possess an
exceptionally strong creative mindset, and I acknowledge that
I may not be inherently clever. Despite this, I took pride in
developing my Typography using my unique approach. The
multitude of approaches and ideas available for creating a
personalized type font presented a challenge, leading to
moments of confusion regarding my own decisions.
Decision-making isn't my forte, but fortunately, our
instructor consistently demonstrated patience and provided
valuable guidance throughout the journey. Developing our
design thinking was a critical aspect of the process, with the
most challenging part for me being the selection of
appropriate lines and strokes.
Findings
I grappled with uncertainty about whether everyone would
appreciate my design. Consequently, I recognized the need to
understand and meet the majority's expectations, prompting me
to embark on a learning journey in this aspect.
