Information Design: Exercise 2
Information Design / Week 01 – Week 03
Exercise 2
Low J- Yin / 0352888
Introduction
Exercise
Instruction:
1. Organize a group of information into a visual poster that combines and utilizes the LATCH principles (Minimum 4).
2. You are required to use the digital photo editing/illustration software available to assemble the information into a LATCH infographic poster.
3. You are allowed to reuse back the images but you have to create the rest of visuals to complete the poster.
The LATCH Principle is a framework introduced by Richard Saul Wurman for organizing information effectively. It consists of five primary ways to structure information:
- Location – Organizing information based on physical or conceptual geography (e.g., maps, AR navigation apps, store directories).
- Alphabet – Sorting information in alphabetical order, useful for lists, directories, or indexes (e.g., contact lists, encyclopedias).
- Time – Arranging content chronologically to show progression or history (e.g., timelines, schedules, fitness tracking).
- Category – Grouping data based on shared characteristics or themes (e.g., genres in music apps, product categories in e-commerce).
- Hierarchy – Structuring information by importance, size, or ranking (e.g., best-selling products, search result rankings).
Reflection
Throughout this course, I have learned how to create both an infographic poster and its animated version. This process has taught me the importance of managing white space effectively to ensure clarity and visual balance. Additionally, I have gained skills in organizing and condensing information into a single, well-structured poster while maintaining readability and engagement.
This experience has helped me develop a better understanding of design principles, especially in simplifying complex information for better communication. Moving forward, I will apply these skills to future projects, ensuring that my designs are both visually appealing and easy to understand.
