Introduction

Project 1:  Proposal

Theme: "Cultural Sensitivity in Design"

The project aims to delve into the theme of "Cultural Sensitivity in Design" by focusing on the traditional Korean craft of "Mother of Pearl Inlay" or "Najeonchilgi." Through research and design exploration, the goal is to understand the significance of this cultural practice, its evolution in modern times, and its potential as a contemporary design element.

Process:

The project began with group discussions to select a topic that aligns with the theme and offers ample research opportunities. Considering factors such as relevance, accessibility of information, and broad research scope, "Mother of Pearl Inlay" emerged as the chosen topic. Tasks were then distributed among group members to facilitate comprehensive research and exploration.

Research and Ideas:

Initial research predominantly focused on Korean sources, delving into the traditional techniques and cultural context of "Najeonchilgi." The inquiry aimed to uncover reasons behind the decline of this traditional craft, efforts towards modernization, and its relevance in contemporary design discourse. Our approach involves integrating traditional elements with modern aesthetics to create designs that resonate with current sensibilities while honoring the heritage of "Najeonchilgi."

Project 2: Data Collection

This stage involves gathering diverse materials relevant to the cultural theme through various methods such as observation studies, visual research, and interviews. The collected data will provide insights into the chosen culture, aiding in the development of design proposals rooted in cultural understanding.

Process:

The research process incorporated multiple methodologies to gather comprehensive data on "Najeonchilgi." This included virtual observation of museum exhibits, online research for supplementary materials, and interviews with experts to gain deeper insights into the cultural significance and artistic techniques associated with the craft.

Final Project : Final Design

The culmination of our research and design exploration involves creating visual designs that reflect our interpretation of the theme "Framing." Drawing from our research on "Najeonchilgi," we aim to strike a balance between cultural authenticity and contemporary design innovation.

Process:

Following group discussions and consultation with the lecturer, we explored several design ideas, ultimately choosing to focus on a concept that highlights the juxtaposition between traditional culture and modern reality. This approach aims to create visually compelling artwork that communicates the cultural significance of "Najeonchilgi" while addressing contemporary themes of heritage preservation and cultural change.

Reflection

Studying Intercultural Design has been a real eye-opener for me. It's helped me understand how culture and design connect in important ways. We focused on themes like "Cultural Sensitivity in Design," which made me think deeply about how design can reflect and honor different cultures.

One thing I found really interesting was how much we emphasized research and field work. We had to pick a topic and then go out and gather information from different sources like observing, interviewing people, and looking things up online. For example, when we looked into "Najeonchilgi," a traditional Korean art form, we discovered not just the beautiful craft itself, but also its cultural meanings.

Another cool part was when we had to come up with our own design ideas. We had to think about how to show cultural stories through our designs while also making them modern and appealing. We called this "Framing." It was a challenge, but it made me see how important it is to blend tradition with what's happening now.

Working with my classmates was also really helpful. We shared ideas and feedback, which made our work stronger. Overall, this module has taught me a lot about how to respect and celebrate different cultures through design. It's a lesson I'll carry with me as I continue my creative journey.

Feedback

Task 01

no feedback

Task 02

“Group 44, well done on your data collection (I can't access the online materials). As you are focusing on Korean culture and have picked Najeonchilgi, perhaps you may look into the area of forgotten culture/one that can be significantly improved. with this, you will be able to increase cultural awareness.”

Task 03

We were told that showing the artwork contrast is a nice way of grabbing the audience’s attention, and that the booklet would be good for including information. Lecturer was content with the variety of ideas that we provided and told us to figure out a way to combine our ideas in a way that best showcases our chosen topic.
