EXERCISE

I had started my task 3 with researching more artwork from the article. I found some artwork that i am very interested on to have further research.

fig 1.0 artwork of Gerda Wegener

The series i had found was also an artwork from Gerda Wegener, the artwork had inspired me to start my sketches.

fig 1.1 sketch #1

Here is my first sketch. The background of the painting shows a messy room with clothes scattered around, a messy bed, and two women—one of them smoking and another was sitting beside her. I wanted to show a relationship between them that reflects gender equality in everyday life. But I feel like the sketch doesn't quite meet what I was aiming for, and it's not like the reference I had in mind. So i had try to draw another type of idea i had in mind.

fig 1.2 sketch #2

From the idea i had, i try to sketch second drawing. Inspired by the artwork of Gerda Wegener, which focused on women's bodies and beautiful faces, I started my second drawing. I drew heads as flowers and want to hid the garden and flower where gender is usually obvious. This artwork shows that everyone, regardless of gender, is beautiful like a flower, each blooming uniquely.

fig 1.3 sketch #3

The last sketch i had used similiar body poses and angle with sketch #1. I used japanese "geisha" for both men and women's face. The man wears a red dress, playing with his hair, while the woman smokes and reads a newspaper.

I had chosen sketch #3 as my final digital art.

fig 1.3 sketch #3

i had research for body poses and adjusted by my own. For the red hair lady, i had placed a towel on her body while she smoking and holding newspaper.

fig 1.4 reference of flowers

Next, i had research the reference for flowers, i want to make the image full with flowers beside the two ladies, after consultation with miss, i had change the format.

fig 1.5 colour theme & visual references

I follow the colour theme and visual references.

fig 1.6 screenshot of progress

I had tried to make the person looks more manlike with adding black brush on armpit, but the image does not seems good so i deleted.

FINAL DIGITAL DESIGN (PDF) :

The artwork shows two figures: a man wearing a red dress and playing with his hair, and a woman who is naked with a towel covering certain body parts while smoking a cigarette and holding a newspaper. Both individuals are adorned in Japanese geisha makeup. Both of the characters had highlighting a difference from traditional gender norms. The frame suggests that this scene isn't accepted in real life but is only allowed in art gallery.

The use of a nude colour palette imbues the artwork with a vintage charm and elegance. These colors contribute to a balanced and harmonious composition. Drawing from principles of Gestalt psychology, wherein visual elements are perceived as organized wholes, the composition effectively communicates its message. Additionally, the strategic use of red adds contrast to the painting, drawing immediate attention to the main characters and conveying the important meaning of the artwork at first glance. To emphasize the focal point of the two "ladies," I chose to use nude colours for the flowers, reducing their visual attention.

FEEDBACK

After consultation with miss, the result seems fine to her, and the idea are good. The whole image need to be careful if the background are having too many elements, might effect the focus point are unclear. The idea are related to the artist i had researched, and the colour theme are also suitable.
